The Golf Performance Center: An important ingredient to a complete club experience
Today’s private club members are seeking opportunities to improve, connect, compete, socialize and enjoy the game of golf together with one another. Consequently, we’re seeing a golf-oriented amenity that’s bringing tremendous value to members in many different ways.
In the past, a golf performance center was commonly no more than a simple indoor or sheltered teaching space or a collection of hitting bays. Today, it is a comprehensive golf and social environment that brings together practice, instruction, technology, entertainment, club fitting, retail and social activity. When planned thoughtfully, it becomes a hub of activity and an active and valuable destination.
At ELM | Ervin Lovett Miller, we have seen a significant increase in interest in these facilities. We recently celebrated the grand opening of a new Golf Performance Center for Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville, Florida, and we are currently consulting with several other clubs that have similar facilities in various stages of planning and design. While each club has different objectives, the underlying motivation is consistent. Members value different ways to engage with golf, and these facilities provide amenities for members that remain relevant throughout the year.
The best performance centers support multiple forms of practice. Traditional range practice remains important, but technology now allows members remarkable access to data on ball flight, spin, speed, distance control, swing mechanics and equipment performance. Indoor and covered hitting bays can extend practice opportunities during inclement weather, extreme temperatures or limited daylight hours. They can also accommodate structured practice sessions that may be difficult to conduct on a busy practice tee.
Instruction is naturally central to the concept. A performance center gives the club’s golf professionals a dedicated setting for individual lessons, clinics, junior programs, player development and fitness-related evaluation. Video analysis, launch-monitor technology and other diagnostic tools can help instructors communicate more clearly and give members measurable feedback.
Club fitting and equipment sales are another important component. When fitting technology and professional expertise are located together, the club can provide a level of service that is difficult to replicate through a conventional retail experience. Members can test equipment, review performance data, receive recommendations and purchase equipment in one coordinated experience. This strengthens the club’s relationship with its members while creating an additional source of revenue.
Putting is typically a significant component of the performance-center program. Dedicated putting studios can support stroke analysis, putter fitting, green-reading instruction and distance-control training. Indoor putting environments also provide a valuable year-round teaching opportunity without requiring large amounts of space.
The entertainment potential of these facilities is compelling as well. Simulator golf, skills competitions, leagues and group events can make the performance center appealing to members who are not seeking formal instruction. Member groups can enjoy golf in a relaxed setting, with provisions for food and beverage service designed integrally into the program.
At Timuquana Country Club, the Golf Performance Center was conceived as an extension of the club’s broader golf and social experience, and it is successfully achieving this objective. Working closely with Timuquana’s leadership and staff we created a destination that supports player development, enhances the instruction program, elevates the club fitting and purchasing experience (with increased revenue), provides another popular food and beverage venue, and elevates member engagement.
That broader vision is increasingly shaping our conversations with other clubs.
Our experience suggests that Golf Performance Centers are no longer a niche amenity but are becoming an important part of a complete and forward-looking club experience.
